How to network like a boss

Hey small business owner 👋

Does the idea of networking overwhelm you? Girl, we’ve all been there!

Scroll down to read my best tips for embracing small biz networking, and an invitation to a super chill, low-key mixer to help get you started.

Why is networking important as a small business?

Networking is more than just about making sales. While we love getting new customers and cash injections, networking is ultimately about building relationships that help you grow your biz in many different ways.

Your muggle friends (ie. those who don’t own a business) won’t get everything you do. While they might be supportive, it’s important to interact with other small business owners who understand the highs and the lows of entrepreneurship.

It’s important to take the pressure off networking being solely a money-making activity. While networking can help boost sales, it’s also a great way to meet new peers who could potentially become collaborators to help you expand your audience. Networking offers the opportunity to makes referrals, guest on podcasts, learn about other industry events, and much more.

So how do we network successfully? Here are 4 tips to get you started…

📝 Have a game plan

Think about what you want to get out of every networking event you attend.

Do you want to add more eyes to your small biz? Make some connections and contacts for potential collaboration? Are you looking to upskill in a certain area, or look for a mentor or coach to grow your business? Or are you just looking to meet some likeminded small business babes to occasionally co-work or commiserate with?

Having an idea in mind of what you want to get out of the experience will help you feel less nervous going in.

🪩 Be authentically you

Nerves can get the best of us, especially if you’re new to networking. But it’s important to stay true to yourself, and not a version you feel you need to be at a networking event.

This includes wearing something that makes you feel confident! Even if you’re going to an event with a more formal dress code, wearing accessories that you love and represent your brand is a great way to stand out while still feeling like yourself.

🍒 Nail your elevator pitch

An elevator pitch is a short description of who you are and what you do. Imagine you’re in a lift with a potential client and you only have 30 seconds to sell yourself.

If you’re struggling, start with your story, what you’re passionate about, and what your business has to offer. You don’t have to get it perfect on the first try! Especially if you plan on networking often, it’s okay to refine and perfect your elevator pitch until you find one that feels encapsulates your small business.

🛼 The art of the follow up

Attending a networking event is the first step to expanding your reach, but what you do after is important, too! Make sure you connect with people via social media (like Instagram or LinkedIn) so that you stay in touch, and a couple of days after the event, send them a message.

Here is an example of a follow up message you can send to someone you met at a networking event:

“Hey [name] 👋🏼

It was so great to meet you at [event]! I really enjoyed speaking to you about [shared interest].

Let me know if you ever want to have a catch up over coffee about [shared interest].

[Your name]”

💡 Looking for your next networking event?

Another key element of networking as a small business owner is finding the right event for you. Each month, The Content Club hosts an online Small Biz Mixer for creative business owners around the world to connect, showcase their businesses, and build community!

Here’s a quick rundown of how the event goes:

👋🏼We kick things off at 11am (the full event is 90mins long).

📣In the chat, everyone can share their links to connect.

🫱🏻‍🫲🏽Next, we break out into smaller groups, allowing you to engage more personally with fellow participants.

🎉Finally, we reconvene to share our key takeaways.

If you fancy flexing your networking skills, click here to join us in the next on on 22nd May 2024!
